Pinkeye Action Plan

Prevention is the most effective and least costly strategy for managing cattle health because it stops outbreaks before they require expensive treatments. This is especially important for controlling pinkeye, which can spread rapidly throughout the herd once established.

Although pinkeye is a bacterial infection (Moraxella bovis), once established in a host, the bacteria can be spread rapidly from animal to animal by flies that feed on infected secretions from the eyes and nose of the host.

Herd and Environmental Management

  • Avoid unnecessary handling: Keeping cattle in a confined area can provide the ideal environment for disease transmission. During high-risk periods, avoid handling and yarding livestock unless necessary.
  • Reduce dust: Dust can cause eye irritation and help attract infected flies to a new host. Reduce dust wherever possible, especially in yards, feeding points, and water sources.
  • Fly control: Bush flies can travel large distances to find hosts, so you may be picking up pinkeye from many farms over. Managing fly pressure can be a useful strategy in preventing the spread of pinkeye.
  • Pasture management: Tall weeds and pastures can injure and irritate eyes. Managing the height of pastures can be an important step in preventing the onset of pinkeye.
  • Nutrition: Effective mineral, vitamin and trace element supplementation can support herd immunity. Adequate copper, zinc and selenium levels within the animal are particularly important for eye health.
  • Isolate cases: Separate cattle showing tearing or cloudiness from the main herd and treat immediately to contain an outbreak.
