With the warmer weather come the flies, and if the first wave of flies is anything to go by, we are in for another big fly season. On the back of high fly pressure last year, and increasing incidence of resistance to chemical control, reports of pinkeye were quite significant. Feedback from early adopters of BoviPro-FlyBye in summer last year were extremely positive, most notably in reducing defensive behaviour and the transmission of pinkeye.

Pinkeye outbreaks tend to flare-up over the warmer months, as grass seeds, dust and flies play their part in aggravating and spreading the disease. Flies are attracted to the infected eyes, feeding on the secretions before moving from animal to animal spreading the disease. As a result, cattle producers may need to pull out all the tricks in their bag to break the chain and manage nuisance flies this season.

Ongoing research and trials over the past five years culminated in the creation of FlyBye, a specifically formulated combination of several organic and inorganic ingredients, that when ingested, circulate within the blood and, on excretion from the skin, have been shown to repel flies in cattle. A study involving one of the individual components of FlyBye saw a reduction of pest-fly coverage on beef cattle by 47% and a reduction of observed defensive behaviours by cattle of 41% (Durunna and Lardner, 2021).

Similarly, according to trials and producer feedback after the first year of commercialisation, BoviPro-FlyBye has yielded great success in reducing defensive behaviours and the incidence of pinkeye in beef cattle. As flies generally arrive sooner than dry feed, the need for a green feed version has seen the launch of BoviFlyBye: Fly Controlling Supplement for Cattle Grazing Green Feed, a supplement that assists in reducing fly pressure and supplies essential minerals, vitamins and trace elements that can aid in boosting general health, immunity and energy utilisation.
